The End of a Royal Bromance: Did Meghan Markle Cause a Rift Between Prince Harry and David Beckham?
David Beckham, once an unassuming lad from east London, found himself entwined in royal life in ways he never expected.
The former football star, renowned for his athletic prowess, has made repeated appearances at high-profile royal events—though he’s still waiting for that coveted knighthood.
In a noteworthy development last year, Beckham (who holds an OBE) became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation after a charming encounter with King Charles at Highgrove Estate.
The two shared insights on beekeeping while strolling through the estate’s lush gardens covering 15 acres.
The connection between Beckham and the royals deepened when he made his debut at a state banquet held at Buckingham Palace in December 2024, flanked by various dignitaries, including those from Qatar.
His relationship with the royal family flourished further as he and his wife Victoria attended not just one, but two royal weddings.
Dressed impeccably in a Ralph Lauren morning suit to complement Posh Spice’s outstanding navy gown during Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding, Beckham turned heads.
Fast forward to May 2018, when he rocked a sleek Dior suit at the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
This invitation to the Sussexes’ wedding signaled a firm friendship between the two couples, but behind the scenes, matters took a different turn, as reported by The Mail on Sunday.
Beckham’s friendship with Prince William began when they bonded over sports; they met initially due to his role as President of the Football Association.
Their camaraderie was further solidified when they attended the London Olympics in 2012 and collaborated on England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Harry, on the other hand, had a longstanding connection with the Spice Girls, meeting them during a performance in South Africa.
His friendship with Beckham blossomed later, facilitated by his brother William.
The two became buddies, hitting up various hotspots, from raucous Las Vegas clubs to the prestigious Arts Club in Chelsea.
An incident at the Arts Club in 2016 involved a fallout between Harry and comedian James Corden, which Beckham had to mediate.
Although the atmosphere was tense due to a misinterpreted joke, Beckham’s diplomatic nature helped ease the conflict.
The dynamics shifted when Meghan Markle began dating Prince Harry in 2016.
Their pairing was reportedly facilitated by their mutual connection with Beckham’s communications director, Izzy May, who was close friends with the chief of Soho House, helping to arrange secret meetings for the couple.
The Beckhams supposedly rolled out the red carpet for Meghan as she transitioned into her new life in the UK, with Victoria even offering her a list of trusted stylists and hairdressers.
Following their royal wedding, Beckham joined Harry and Meghan on their Australian tour, including attending the Invictus Games, which Harry founded.
However, reports hinted that Harry’s royal friendship faced challenges due to Meghan’s jealousy about media attention.
The Daily Mail indicated that she wanted to minimize competition in the press, leading to tensions on their tour.
Fast forward to 2023, and The Mail on Sunday reported the Beckhams had felt “Markled,” a term indicating former friends who have moved on, and in their case, posed serious concerns regarding possible leaks of stories about the Sussexes.
This allegedly charged phone call left David utterly fuming.
A source relayed that despite the Beckhams being supportive during Meghan’s integration into royal life, the rift caused by accusations led to an implosion of the friendship.
Regrettably, it seemed like any bridge-building efforts in the future were now improbable.
In a follow-up account from Tom Bower’s biography, “Revenge,” Harry’s instability heightened Meghan’s suspicions about friends leaking stories to the tabloid press.
One significant accusation involved Victoria, which prompted Harry to confront David directly, further straining their bond.
Yet, even though the Beckhams may have distanced themselves from the Sussexes, they haven’t lost touch with the rest of the royal family.
They were recently spotted socializing with King Charles and Camilla at a dinner celebrating Slow Food at Highgrove.
Perhaps this means that a knighthood isn’t entirely out of reach after all!
