It has been revealed that Meghan Markle was deeply saddened after the Queen turned down her offer to live in a wing at Windsor Castle.
Harry was asked by the Duchess of Sussex whether he could convince Her Majesty to grant them private rooms in the residence.
Instead, the Queen offered the couple Frogmore Cottage, which is nearby.
“Meghan needed a wing at the 950 year old Windsor Castle,” a royal source said.
“She demanded that Harry speak with her. However, the Queen respectfully denied the request.
“Eventually, the castle will be given to Prince Charles.
“Harry and Meghan were originally happy with Frogmore Cottage, but it turned out to be the wrong fit for them, as they were cut off from the rest.”
The Queen ‘hoped’ Harry and Meghan ‘would respect’ her gift
The Windsor Estate has been home to the Royal Family for nearly 1,000 years. Among its recent residents were Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Prince Andrew with Sarah Ferguson.
As part of royal tradition, the late Queen gifted various properties on the estate to family members over the years. One of the most notable was Frogmore Cottage, which she gave to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their wedding in 2018.
However, according to The Times, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex originally had their sights set on a different home—inside Windsor Castle itself.
They reportedly asked if living quarters within the Castle could be made available to them after their marriage.
At the time, only Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had private apartments within the Castle. Other royals lived in various homes across the larger estate.
The Queen is said to have “politely but firmly” rejected Harry and Meghan’s request, instead offering them Frogmore Cottage as a gift.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl wrote in The New Royals that the Queen hoped the couple would “respect” her decision and see the gesture as a generous wedding gift.
The Cottage, located on the Windsor Estate, underwent extensive renovations before the couple moved in.
This moment marked a turning point in Harry and Meghan’s royal journey—one that many believe influenced their later decisions to step back from royal duties and relocate to North America.
