Princess Diana was ‘cold, distant, except in the presence of paparazzi’ – Spain’s former king reveals

The former king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, has stirred the pot with intriguing revelations in his upcoming memoir.

Set to debut next week, the book titled Reconciliation includes bold statements about Princess Diana, whom he describes as “cold” and “distant” except when surrounded by photographers.

This latest assertion from the disgraced monarch, who has faced scrutiny for rumored numerous extramarital escapades, also includes a flat denial of any romantic involvement with Diana.

The rumors about their relationship have lingered since the 1980s, particularly after the royal family hosted Diana and then-Prince Charles, along with their sons, at the Marivent Palace on multiple occasions.

Interestingly, it is reported that Diana had an aversion to the former king.

According to her biographer, Andrew Morton, she once referred to him as a “very libidinous man,” painting a picture of discomfort during their interactions.

Morton recounts how Diana confided in friends after a stay in Mallorca, expressing that she felt uneasy alone with Juan Carlos, although she emphasized that nothing untoward happened.

Diana’s discomfort may not have been unfounded.

Allegations regarding Juan Carlos’s womanizing ways were brought to light by former police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo in a parliamentary hearing in 2024.

He claimed that Spain’s National Intelligence Centre had gone so far as to administer female hormones to Juan Carlos to curb his notorious sexual appetite, which officials deemed a concern for the nation.

The former king’s abdication in 2014 was partly linked to his high-profile affair with businesswoman Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein among various scandals.

It’s no secret that Diana experienced her own share of romantic entanglements, leading many to draw parallels between the two figures.

Friends of Diana illustrated her approach to love, likening it to a game played with charm and tact.

As noted in Diana in Search of Herself: Portrait of a Troubled Princess, she was adept at captivating men, suggesting there was an art to her allure, rather than a cynical ploy.

Her first rumored affair began in 1985 with her bodyguard, Barry Mannakee.

Noted author Tina Brown explains that for someone like Diana, trapped in a gilded cage, a bodyguard might represent one of the few authentically masculine presences she encountered, making him a tempting figure for romantic interest.

In a reflective moment captured in a recorded conversation, Diana lamented the joy she felt in Mannakee’s presence, reiterating her need for approval.

“I was like a little girl in front of him the whole time, desperate for praise,” she confessed, unveiling the vulnerability beneath her public persona.

As the memoir’s launch draws near, it seems the revelations will only add fuel to the fire surrounding both Juan Carlos and Diana—a tale of intrigue, romance, and the complexity of royal lives intertwining, all against the backdrop of public fascination with the lives of the royals.

With each page of this upcoming book, we anticipate not just the story of a former king, but a deeper dive into the enigmatic life of Princess Diana, a woman forever remembered for her grace, beauty, and the whispers of scandal that trailed her every step.

As history unfolds in Reconciliation, audiences will undoubtedly find themselves enraptured by the recounting of past events that continue to echo in modern discourse.
